Coniston is a prime example of a place where nature and history, environment and man, meet in a topographical dimension, and together generate culture.

The Ruskin Museum uses Coniston’s environment and its literary and cultural heritage as a rich and varied resource. We give an award-winning, authoritative introduction to John Ruskin, the great Victorian pundit on aesthetics and ethics, and father figure of The Welfare State and The ‘Green’ Movement; we display the largest permanent exhibition of his art, demonstrating how he developed his ideas through drawing. True to Ruskin’s firm belief that the best museums provide an imaginative and inspirational ‘Open Sesame’ into ‘All that is lovely in the life of Nature, and heroic in the life of Men’, we offer thought-provoking insights into The Story of Coniston, from its primeval geological origins to the Jet Age epitomised by the 1950s Speed Ace Donald Campbell, who broke four of his seven World Water Speed Records on Coniston Water in his hydroplane, Bluebird K7. The lake also figures as the adventure playground of the ‘Swallows and Amazons’ : Coniston’s topography and heritage gave Arthur Ransom his context.
